9 to 5′s are creativity killers

Having to deal with a bullshit 9 to 5 that eats up 75% of your waking hours, and about 90% of your mental stamina each day REALLY makes it challenging to keep making worthwhile music.

Yeah, I could go in my studio and chop up the first sample I dig up, but its not gonna be right….its gonna lack the depth and feel that would come if I was able to spend 8 hours a day on making beats!!!!!

At this stage, I find I am forced to make a bunch of beats during the periods of time where I have vacation scheduled or stat holidays (like over christmas, I’m gonna get some beats done).

Proof of this, was when I was off work for 6 months looking after my kids – I made ALL of the beats for Concrete Kings – and about 10-15 that didn’t make the album – in that time.  so your talking like 30 beats minimum – I would have made more but we were recording the album so we were busy with other things.  But the vibes were awesome.

So I guess the bottom line is – i’d love to be able to say fuck off to my 9 to 5 – but then I’d also be saying fuck off to food, shelter, clothes and other such trivial items.

  1. ha, yea I feel you man. I’m no 9-5er, I need to be creative and do my thing, but who’s going to pay the bills?? It’s a catch 22 for people like us. But we need to keep that goal in mind, instead of falling into the 9-5 trap. I’m now in a place where I’m working only part time at my 9-5, and I’m seeing that it’s just a slow process sometimes. And also if we don’t want to be apart of that world, we do need to work harder, we do need to use vacation time so we can grow are business ‘s. That’s why so many people fail or don’t even try because there not willing to do whatever it takes. Sometimes it feels like it’s never going to work out, I’ll be stuck doing this 9-5 shit forever, that’s why I need motivators to keep me up. I look at this commercial MJ did all the time to keep me going, maybe you’ll like it too.
